Web 2.0 is all about conversation and collaboration and this is a space that Social Media Marketing (SMM) creates superbly.

SMM creates huge opportunities for conversations about products and services of ALL kinds, and consumers are waking up to it big time.

This, in turn, expands both your scope and your challenges for creatively marketing your products and services through blogging, Facebook pages, Twitter feeds, You Tube videos of all flavors. Your buyers are increasingly taking advantage of these tools to educate themselves about the choices available to them in the marketplace; and the marketplace is now the planet!

It is, however, sad to see that many sellers don’t yet seem to be taking it as seriously as their buyers.

Is it time for you to begin exploring the use of Social Media Marketing vehicles for YOU product or service? Or expanding and integrating new platforms into your existing web presence?

Cool ‘map’ of online communities

I recently completed an internet / social media analysis for a small business; they gave me a check and said they felt they had received more value than that — always a good feeling. We talked about how they might use their existing email list for newsletter marketing, and some of the possible pitfalls. Like the need for setting up an account with a good email service provider and using their double opt-in before starting.

They said that the wife was interested in learning internet marketing and social media marketing and that she would take over from there, and thanks again for the analysis.

Not long after, I received an obvious email blast – that clearly listed ALL of their client names and email addresses in the “To” section of the header!

Big woops!

I emailed them immediately pointing out that it could take only a couple of their business clients hollering “Spam!” to cause them to spend a few hours/days of their time explaining and negotiating with their ISP as to why they should not be shut down for spamming. I also mentioned that any one of the disclosed clients could possibly pursue a confidentiality legal action if they were really rubbed the wrong way, and also hinted that the whole thing could give a pretty bush-league, unprofessional look to their accounting business.

So, I guess that’s why I get paid the big bucks … to support entrepreneurs and small / medium businesses in the effective use of the internet and social media marketing … partly by avoiding the cost of replacing good shoes with bullet holes in them.

It’s tough enough to start and run a small business in today’s financial climate, plus learn effectively use of new tools like internet and social media marketing … without having to do battle with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) as well.

These two organizations are among the country’s most powerful lobbying forces. Yet while the Chamber and NFIB claim to speak for small business, their lobbying record suggests their primary allegiance lies with BIG business. They have lobbied (to the benefit of mainly retail chains and banks) against Pennsylvania legislation to slash business income tax rates , fought to preserve offshore tax havens that only multinationals can use, and supported multi-million-dollar tax breaks for big-box retailers.
